FRIDAY. JUXE 22nd. Tim Council met at 7.)4 p.m. Present Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), H. M. Coiilson. ,J. King, AY. Jeffries, It. F. Perham, G. Heinz, and G. Wood. Apologies were made for the absence ot .Messrs Lloyd, Atackay, and Evans. The minutes were confirmed and correspondence otitwaul approved. IX AVAR D COR It KSPOXDEXCE. From J. Llovd apologising for absence.—Received. Trout Westland Sub-L nion replying to complaint of damage done to the seats in the pavilion cn Cass Square on .June Itlt., and stating that the seats had been repaired and in future a man would he placed in .charge ol the pavilion when matches were being played.— Received. Fr> m Department of Health, acknowledging letter in reference to the roluse collection, and stating theta was no reason this service il made compulsory, should not prove satisfactory. - Received. From Ivune in reference to conveniences required at public places ol entertainment.—Received; It was resolved to refer the letter to the owners ol the licensed houses and to ask it they had any suggestions to make, they would he sent on to the Depart-

Kearns, sent'., drawing attention to state of cemetery on south-west side, and asking for attention.-- Received; to receive attention. | From Westland tool Storage and j Dairy toy., Ltd., asking for road and pathway to be improved in the vicinity of their proposed factory, at the corner of Wold and llritlan Street, and stating they had already formed one crossing and won* prepared to make a concrete kerbiug, when the open drain was piped, and other requirements ell’ectetl.—Received ; tel'erred to the I’uhlie Wroks Committee to report at next meeting, it being considered the requirements were of a substantial nature. The money should be spent on repairs to the I lokitika-.Mahinapua road and the read towards Artburstow n, both of which needed considerable attention. there should he a reduction made in the killing charges. The Mayor said it was to he remembered that there was no depreciation fund, and no charge for clerical work. The position was not as good as it looked on the figines supplied. Air Jeffries said on the figures shown, it was quite possible for the Abattoirs Committee to consider the possibility of a* reduction being made in tlte charges for killing. Air Coiilson said the matter was only a small one, as if the fees were reduced according to the small profit shown it would only be a small one, while also there was no reduction made for
depreciation. Mr Jeffries stated that the abattoirs were showing a profit every year and there should be a rebate granted to tlte butchers using the abattoirs. Alt I’erham said there had been no substantial reduction in the price ol meat. Probably the butchers were waiting for a reduction in the killing lees to give the public the benefit. The subject was referred to the Abattoir Committee to report at next meeting as to the suggestion to reduce the price of killing fees. OVERSEER’S REPORT. I beg to submit the following report cm work done dining the past month:On account of a shortage of water at the reservoir. \Ye made an inspection of the pipe line from the reservoir to the Lake and finding only 3 small leaks. The following day we went over the line again and removed several air valves and released a large quantity air, the inflow improved considerably, but being still short about ‘2D gallons per minute. I stayed at the Lake that night to get at the intake in the morning, before the Lake got rough. The Chairman of Works and two permanent hands arrived in the morning and we disconnected the intake pipe and renewed the grating the How of water then showed a decided improvement. During the month 20 chains of Sale Street footpaths on the Western side have been cleaned of growth and tlte drain between Weld and Stafford Street cleaned out. 15fitLaii Street drains between Stafford and Hampden sired.- have been cleaned r.nd iootpat' s on n e-tern side cleaned ready for gravelling. Fitzherbert Street water tables have been cleaned from Hampden Street to Tudor Street on one side, and from Hampden to Park Street on the other side.
R idlest tin Street drain and footpath oil the western side have been also denned out between AA'cld and Stafford Streets. Davie Street between Hampden and Park Streets lias been cleared of gorsc and gravelled. A section of Sewell Street drain c< t lapsed about the Ist of the month and has also been renewed. Throe crossings have been put in, one concrete and two timber with gravel approaches. During the month 80 feet of concrete pipes have been made. Several waiter connections, and repairs to leaking mains, have been attended to. The usual Stieet cleaning and maintenance work has also been attended to.—Received. The Town Clerk mentioned that, since the repairs to the- water supply line had I ecu completed, the reservoir with full pre-sure on all the time, bad been overflowing all the time, u lib It was a record -imo the installation bed been made. Air Conl-on urged that the horse lor tin* rse of the Borough be prn< tired ns soon as possible. Air Jelfries said lie had the mailer in band, but lie was not prepared to throw away the Council’s money, ami su was waiting till lie was able to secure a horse that was suitable and would be worth the money paid for it. The Mayer agreed this was the best course to pursue and tlte matter dropped. Tlte Council rose at 8.20 p.m.
