A change is coining over tin* spit it of dance music, writes the ‘‘Morning Rost.” During the war years and in the period of semi-revolutionary movements which followed the armistice me nerves were on edge, and tho jazz became popular, because it suited the staccato mood of the public. To-day we arc settling down to a. rhythm of life that is almost normal, and the smack-ha ng-clacketty-rack-pom-pom-zapp-ernsh form of syncopated noise is only performed in dame halls m small provincial towns and the outer ring of the London suburb-. Slower and suitor and more flowing music is expected by dancers, and the best bands—like that which came from the Ralais Royal, Xew Fork, to perform on the stage of tile Hippodrome—are attempting to "sym-phoni.-o syncopation” (to use Mr I’aul 'Whiteman’s phrase in the current issue of that admirable journal, the “Dancing Times”). So dance music, has become more artistic and humane— to the delight of the less youthiul votaiies!

At- the meeting of tho Westland Land Board yet;tenly afternoon tho question of river bed lands in the Waitaha river, which had been adjourned from the previous meeting came up again for further discussion. The Commissioner had previously expressed himself in favor of making a commonage of the area affected, a matter of some 8(X) or 900 acres. Air AY. Wilson who appeared for the Applicant for the area, fronting her holding made a- strong objection to the proposal to make a commonage. He stated that he had interviewed a number of the property holders ad'eetod, and each of them had expressed themselves against such a proposal. He emphasised that it would be far better to follow the course the Board had dune in the past-, of granting the river lied areas to the holders of land fronting the river. This course had generally found favor and had given no trouble. The Commissioner said the river was constantly changing its course, and so the tenure was notvery stable, while if a commonage was made it would not so seriously affect, a settler if the course changed, as he would then still he able to use the land for grazing his stock. One of the applicants (Air Wright) through his agent, Air Wells, stated that he would prefer a grant of the area asked tor, recognising I liar it the river changed its course 1 ho would lose the area, hut lie was ready to take that chant e. It was mentioned that the river had recently changed its course irom one side to the other at the place reierred to, lienee the reason for the application. The Board resolved to further adjourn the applications, with the view to enquiring of the various settlors affected, which procedure they individually favored.
