The sugar freighter Santa Theresa, which Las arrived at the Philippines, reports that five Cuban stowaways were trapped between the coal bunkers and the boilers while the ship was en route from 'Cuba. They were literally routed to death bv scorching heat from the boilers. Four other Cubans, who also stowed away in the hold, not far from the five men, were in a serious condition when the ship arrived. They have been gassed by the fumes from the boilers, and are not expected to live. PAYMENT TO F.S.A. NEW YORK, Juno 1 t. Britain to-day will make tho first payment of interest and amortization rharges of seventy million dollars on her debt to America. It is estimated that, by taking advantage of a condition in the settlement under which she can pay in American Liberty Bonds which are now selling slightly under par, Britain will save I,4oo,(ij«jp dollars. IS U.S.A. LOSING TRADE. WASHINGTON, June 13. 'l’lie balance of trade has begun to turn against the United States. The imports of commodities during tho firstfive months of 1923 totalled 1.71>5,i5«,003 dollars in value and the exports 1.628,175.000 dollars. It was believed that, under the circumstances, the United States would begin heavy shipments of gold, but this is uot the ease. There was 91.241 thousand dollars worth of gold brought in during the period.
