An exciting incident which occnrrca in Afolesworth Street, el 1 i ugt oil. on Saturday serves to illustrate the iis,* to life and limit with which a constable's duty is fraught. A ladder which was being used by some electric wire repair workers slipped from tne post to which it was attached, and (relates an eye-witness of the occurrence'] fell across a stationary butcher's cart. The commotion startled the horse, which promptly made for the centre of the road, along which were then approaching several motorcars; but what might easily have resulted in a serious collision was averted by the plucky action of Constable Tapp, who, following a right-angled course, overtook the runaway in a few seconds, and by grasping the shaft and tugging at the bridle hit, brought vim liorso to a standstill. Last days of Inventory Sale positively ends on Saturday, Juno 2nd. Further cut down prices to reduce stocks for nnnual stocktaking. A unique and opportune time to save considerably on all winter goods. Smashing prices in every department. Don’t miss this big money saving factor. McGruer’s, Hokitika and Groyjnouth.— Adyt.
