RESTRICTION OF EXPORT OF RIMU TIMBER.
(To the Editor). Sir.—When ill is mutter was discussed at ;i meeting of tie local bodies on Wednesday night T stated tliaL up till then the export of riinu timlier Imd not been curtailed and that it was doubtful if there had been any necessity for alarm in regard to the matter.
This morning. Mr Evans has been good enough to send for my perusal, somo correspondence which has iu-i passed between the Board of Trade and il firm of local sawmillers. The tenor of the correspondence is certainly disquieting and it did. to a. great extent, justify the fear of Mr Evans and others who spoke ou the question. I think it only right, therefore, that I should modily my views accordingly. Needless to say I fully realize that the curtailment, of the export of I'imutimber to Australia would be fatal to the success of the sawmilliug indust'i.. ou which this district, to a large extent depends. 1 am etc., H.
