AGREEMENT REACHED.
BETWEEN GREECE AND TURKEY. TERMS OF SETTLEMENT. AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. (Received this day at 8 a.m.) LONDON, May 2ff. The menace of war in the Near East has been removed by an agreement reached at a meeting of tho chief Allied delegations at Lausanne, to which the heads of Jugoslavian, Roumanian and Japanese delegations and the American representative, were invited. It was agreed that a formula bo drawn under which Greece .acknowledges responsibility for war damages in Asia Minor, while Turkey in view of the state of Greece’s finances renounces the right to reparation. Instead of a payment, Greece agrees to a rectification of the frontier at Karagatcli, tiie effect of which is that Greece gives up the triangle of territory in Western Thrace between Arda and Miiritza rivers, and Karagatch. Turkey agrees to the restitution of tho ships captured from Greece. During the meeting, which lasted for three hours, Ismet Pasha, and Vcnizelos sat side by side. Sir 11. Rumbold and M. Pelle appealed for peace. Ismet Pasha, laid emphasis on the devastations wrought by Greek armies while Vcnizelos pleaded Greece’s poverty.
STATEMENT BY ISAIF.T. VENIZELOS’ DELIGHT. {Received this day at 8 a.m.) LONDON, May 27. Ismet said that in renouncing the reparations, Turkey had made the greatest sacrifice for peace. Tho Serbian delegate opposed rectification, hut was not prepared to resist a settlement. Venizolos on leaving the Conference called out dramatically to the waiting journalists, “It’s peace.” Interviewed, he said he was delighTed. “Never mind tho details or number of ships we must give up. Peace is so precious it is worth the sacrifice.” One report says the terms were proposed by Allies and read by Pelle. Another that Venizolos made all offer and that the details will be worked out by oxpets, but there is every reason to hope the matter is settled. Ismet and Yenizelos declare they were fully authorised to make a settlement. The removal of this problem will greatly facilitate the work of tho conference.
