Amongst the valuable number of donations received for the Koiterangi Jumble Sale is a splendid Jersey bull ealf, (1 mouths old, donated by Mr A. Diminick, which will be disposed of on Wednesday evening, and should command a big price, as Mr Diminick has won twice in succession the Silver Cup for most [mints in Jersey classes at the Westland A. and P. Shows.

On Saturday next the great Sawdust Struggle takes place on Cass Ssuaro, when football teams representing the Kanicri Lake road Sawmills will play Arahura Valley sawmills. '1 he teams will nrrivo by motor lorry, and will leave ft sawdust- trail to tlio Square. Admission will by silver coin, and the public are invited to give freely. The funds are for the R.S.A. building scheme.

A football match is to take place on Cass Square on June nd in aid of the Returned Soldiers’ Building Fund. The team to represent Arahura Sawmillers will ho selected from the following ; _T. Despite the boisterous weather on Saturday, Soldiers’ Sale Day under the management of Sirs A. Hunter of the Pioneer Hotel was quite a financial .success. A meeting of tEe Jumble Salo Committee met on Saturday night to make final arrangements in connection with the Jumble Sale and dance to bo held in the Public Hall at Koiterangi, on Wednesday next, May JOtli. Splendid donations and gifts have been promised, and the energetic Committee are leaving no stone unturned to make tlifs the event of the season : and judging by the quantities, quality and variety of goods to he offered, it will bo second only to the Auckland Farmers’ Union Trading Co. Special arrangement's have been made as regards car fares, and visitors from Hokitika and Ross and other places, will lie assured of a splendid clay and evening in the country, recompensed also by purchases at practically half price. The music for the evening will be supplied by the local orchestra and Mr McGregor ras been asked to judge the waltzing compc'i. tion.

On Saturday, for the first time since tne recent floods, the express train from Christchurch ran. right through to Arthur’s Pass. This was on account of the small locomotive that has been drawing a train between the slip and Arthur’s Pass having had a breakdown. The passengers however walked round the slip. Tomorrow, however. the train will again come right through from the other side, and will for the future continue to do so as usual.

A sensational experience was that of a couple of men employed at Warren and Feeney’s sawmill at Blue Spur near Hokitika, on Saturday morning. They were engaged with a couple of horses in conveying, a steel rope, 20 chains in length, up the hill to the bush winch, the horses dragging the rope with chains, when lightning struck th« steel rope At the time one of the men was releasing the rope front an obstacle on the track, and ho was lurowtt into the scrub in a dazed state, while a second flash then struck the rope, causing the horse to belt .screaming up the tracq. They were not stopped till they reached the bush, where, as soon as a buslim'an released them from the chains, they took again to their heels and disappeared into the scrub. accident occurred at 9 a.in. and the mill management decided to cease work for the rest of tlu* day.
