THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.

Couhagi:. To definite courage as “as tho absence of fea.r” is to ignore the fact that courage is a quality in itself, not the absence of another quality. Indeed fear and courage can he present in the same person at the same time, and the world knows no greater heroes than men and women, who, in spite of fear have done magnificently brave things. Sir James Barrie in his rectorial address at the Edinburgh University defined courage as “tho lovely virtue—the rib of Himself that God sent down to His children.” Courage is closely allied to faitll, and faith in essence is a, confession of belief in the •exstenco of truth.
