GOVERNMENT NOMINEES.

ON HARBOUR BOARDS. WELLINGTON, Alay 23

The action of the Government m appointing new nominees on several Harbour Boards throughout the Dominion has been criticised in some quarters, ft has been hinted that the alterations were made for political reasons. The .Minister of Marine said that in. selecting new appointees no consideration whatever was given to their political leanings. Complaints had been received from time to time from those interested in various districts of the unsuitability of some of the Government nominees on Harbour Boaids, and strong representations were made that thev should he replaced when their term of office expired. Changes were accordingly made on the Napier, Tauranmi. and Bay of Islands Harbour Boards. The Minister further slated that there was in the possession of the Department correspondence on the subject which fully justified the action taken. The fact of a person being appointed as a Government nominee on a Board did not give him the right to rca.jpointmo-.it. and the Government would be lacking in its duty if it tailed to "Ivc consideration to the general policy of individual harbour and other public bodies when selecting it- representatives for such bodies. The Hon G. .T. Anderson pointed out that the list of persons recently appointed as Government nominees on Harbour Boards afforded ample proof that the Reform Party did not take politics into consideration when deciding appointments of this kind. This was, he said, in marked contrast to the actions of its predecessors in office, who invariably appointed only thenown supporters to local bodies, and 'o tbe Legislative Council. It was futile, therefore, for the Liberal Press tc criticise the present Government oil thi„ score. The gentlemen recently appointed as Government nominees on the Napier, Tauranga, and Bay of Islands Harbour Boards were all capable men. and the Afinister expressed the opinion that they would see that economy, combined with efficiency, would bo exercised by their respective Boards.
