lAIPROYED HOADS WANTED. (To the Editor). Sir.—T read with interest the report that the Westland County Council intended to purchase a road roller and hoped soon to sec the roads in the vieinitv of Hokitika put into a hotter state than they are at present. 1 now see bv your columns that the progressive Countv Councillors, recently elected for a new term, intend only to purchase a stone crusher, the object hein ir evidently to fill tin the pot holes with' broken metal and lot the motor lorries do the road rolling. Should am* of the Council visit the Grey County, it would be an object, lesson to them to see the work being done by the Grey Countv Engineer in the vicinity « Grcvnionth. I passed along the on Afondav at mid-day and noticed that a road party were at work with a seari-fi-r On Tuesday morning at II a.in. some ten chains of road had been completed the metal from the scanned ede-es had been raked to the centre an the lieavv roller put on*, giving a good crown and a smooth surface with only a few hours rolling. . V similar plant is certainly required in our district, and could be used with advantage, both by the County ■ami Borough autliorties. The main stieo . in the town are in a disgraceful condition and need urgent attention. Hampden St. and the Knnien road are lull of potholes and it is to be hoped that those in authority will at once institute some svsteni whereby the roads and streets 'could be improved for the advantage of the rat payers.
