CHRISTCHURCH, May 22 Frank Smith, a newsvendor, aged 70, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called on, for obtaining a pension certificate by means of false statements. The police gave evidence that Smith failed to declare that he had £l5O in the Savings Bank, and laid declared his earnings as Jills per week, lie obtained the pension for ten mouths, when it was stopped and he had since refunded .CIS wrongfully obtained, and paid an CIS peiy,Jty to the Department. The Magistrate said the penalties provided by the Act were heavy, hut he was loath to send the man to gaol.
