ALLEGED ASSAULT. ASHBURTON, May 17. Thomas Brown, a drover, of Methven appeared in the Ashburton Court this morning charged with causing grievous bodily harm to James Combes by injuring him with a pocket knife. The police applied for a further week’s remand, saying that to-night they would have a roisnltation with the hospital doctor to ascertain when the ease could proceed. They would oppose hail. It was not a case where hail should ho granted, at least at the present time. Every facility would he given the accused to get-.the services of a solicitor if lie so desired. The Bench: Is he on hail now? Senior-Sergeant Jackson: No. lie is in custody. I am keeping him in Ashburton in case any serious .symptoms should arise in regard to the injured man. The Borough Council's loan polls on proposals to borrow £4.900 for the erection of public buildings, and C26,- {););) for streets was carried yesterday, the former by 371 votes to 10! and the latter hv 446 vote.s to 116. The buildings include a theatre and shoos and offices for the Borough Power Board and County Council. The Streets Loan will he expended or hitiimiiiising the Borough si roots. HOSPITAL LEVY. A notable achievement in the realm of wireless w;q registered on I lmrsday night, when a message sent by an amateur at Avalon. California, was flicked up hv an Auckland expiromoiitor. 'I lie nistance is 6060 miles, and the importance of the event lies in the low power (half a kilowatt) used lor transmission. and the fact Lluu only one valve was employed in its reception. The sending ol the message was in the nature of a test, arrangements having been made by Mr A. Sparkman, of Herne Bay, with Major Lawrence Mott, editor of '‘Radio”, an American pubß -atioii. The message was also heard in Sydney, as an acknowledgment sent from there indicates. Farther tests are arranged.

JEWELLERY RECOVERED. WELLINGTON, May 18. \l the Hamilton Police Court to-day, Frederick Loo Williams (20), and Thomas Henry Murray (21) were charged with the theft of jewellery. The accused were found endeavouring to pawn watches, and when a search was made of a valise belonging to teem, jewellery valued at 2200 was discovered. Some of the jewellery had Ibe trade mark of McKenzie and Co., Wellington. The accused were remanded for a week. CARRIAGE OE GOODS BILL. WELLINGTON, May 18. The Prime Minister lias received cabled advice from the Imperial Government to the efleet that the Sea. Carriage of Goods Bill passed_ during last session of Parliament received the Royal Assent on the -II h inst. This Act in the main includes the existing legislation relating to liability for sea carriage of goods, taken from the Shipping and Seamen’s Act, I9OS. Other clauses which arc included wore agreed upon between the shipping and importing interests during the hearing of evidence last session before llie Statutes Revision Committees of hoiuj Houses of Parliament. THE SUGAR MARKET. WELLINGTON. .May 13. Cabled reports received to-day by the Department of Industries and Commerce indicate a slight easing in the sugar market. Cuban sugar (quoted in cal lie April 27 last at 32s (id c.i.f. Europe* is now reported as having been sold down to 29s 9d per cwt c.i.f. The Javanese market reports little business doing, the latest quotations being 31s 9d compared with 34s (id and 35s per o.vt c.i.f. in the previous report. A COAL SHORTAGE. CHRISTCHURCH, May IS. Tile coal shortage which at present is troubling the householders of Christchurch is to all intents and purposes becoming severe. Three weeks ago one of the largest yards in town had in stock 400 tons cf Australian coal. To-day there remained barely 20 tons.
