Westland Cool Storage and Dairy Coy., Ltd.
9 THURSDAY, AfAY 17. At the first meeting of directors called for the purpose of receiving tho report of registration, and transaction of legal business, the following appointments were made :—-Chairman, Air AV. Jamieson (Koiterangi), Vice Chairman, Air D. J. Evans (Hokitika). Air H. T. Parry in reporting that the certificate of registration had been duly received, stated the next business was tliat of appointing a Chairman. He had himself in addition to being managing director, held the chairmanship during the full term of his late Company’s existence, but lie now thought the position should be a. rotating one, and considering the present Company was comprised mostly of farmers, he hoped one from such body may receive the appointment, hut considering his present position lie preferred not to make a suggestion. Air J. B. Douglas (Arahura) felt sure the appointment of a farmer to tiie chairmanship would meet tiie best wishes of the whole district. Ho was in a position to know tiie Company would receive support from several districts not yet included, and a farmer Chairman would very naturally
inspire confidence. Mr R. llarcourt (Koiterangi) thought the suggestion a very excellent one. Tiie farmer would he more likely to approach his fellow supplier. There would lie a common interest, more especially if each district had the opportunity of in turn possessing the chair mnnship. A very foolish notion, had got hold of it few farmers, hut he would like it to lie known tliat the Company as now constituted and likely to he in tiie.future was decidedly in tho best interests of the farmers themselves. He had given a good portion of his time to the project, and lie was pleased it had boon successfully launched.
Air J. ,J. Alclntosh, the next speaker, said lie had given financial assistance as on similar occasions to other factories, not for any pecuniary gain hut to help foster the industry. He was pleased tho centralisation scheme had eventuated, for lie felt sure it was by far the best proposition for the farm-
ers. He himself was a farmer in as much that lie held areas suitable for dairying, and lie was therefore keenly interested to get the lies! proposal to the front, lie also agreed the chairmanship should lie an equitable one to those most likely contributing to tiie greater welfare of the Company. Ollier speakers expressed satisfaction with the idea of tiie chairmanship changing from titne to time, as each district, ii was stated, would in turn have tiie Chairman. Air AY. Jamieson (Koiterangi) was then proposed for the chair and unanimously elected to office for the ensuing
In rising to thank the directors Air Jamieson, speaking at length, .said they all knew he had fought hard for tiie central movement, and he had done so because he conscientiously believed il- was in the best interests, of not only himself as a supplier, hut the v. hole of the farming community as well. He, as a farmer, of course, u anted the maximum return for his labours and that would only he obtained by employment of modern methods possessing the greatest economy. In that respect, the central factory would he a very great asset. He hardly knew how to express Ids pleasure upon tiie scheme eventuating, and lie also felt at a loss how to suitably thank them for giving him the very great honour of being the first Chairman of the newly formed Company. Continuing, lie said lie was very glad Indeed to know tiie Chairmanship was to he a roving one and felt sure every district would lie glad to know it would have equal opportunities of such rep|i'cscntat ion. Furthermore it would help to cement the desired co-operation ot i fie V\ hole district, and. rapidly bring to maturity llic u hole scheme, which he forecasted would he a tremendous success in the interests of dairying and agriculture for the whole of the AA'estir.nd province. He again thanked them assuming always his best services on their behalf. Air D. J. Evans wars then unanimously appointed Vice-Chairman. All the speakers to the motion eulogised All Evans good work in the interests of the dairying industry. He had always given liis valuable services freely towards the advance of the district generally. J t was mainly due tu his optimistic views, and enthusiastic efforts put forth oil their behalf that tiie project was now in existence. Air Jamieson said that Air Evans was tiie “live wire’’ of this district and in Air Barry they laid also secured tiie- well-known “live wire” of the liullcr. AYitli such a combination the Company could well congratulate itself.
Mr Evans in acknowledging the compliments paid to him, said he felt even the vice-Cliair should ho occupied by a. farmer also, hut as the meeting had decided otherwise lie would therefore accept the position with grateful thanks and gave assurance of his whole hearted support- to the Com-
pany. The business transacted included tlie following: Bankers: National Bank of New Zealand. Solicitor: Air A. R. Elceck. Auditor: Air R. Appleton. The managing director then read a letter addressed to the Kuinara, Arahura. Kokatahi, anti AVaitaha Dairy Companies, in which an offer was m**do to take over the several smaller factories mentioned. Air Parry said the question had arisen from a large number of fanners who had expressed their willingness to join up with the Central scheme if their interests in the several factories in which they were financially interested could bo safeguarded. Otherwise they felt that in leaving their factory, causing a lessened output, they may bring about nn unnecessary loss. After discussion the letter was approved all expressing satisfaction with the fairness offered.
