The annual con fere nee of the New /ealand Women Teachers’ Association opened with an at home at which the Alavor and tho Department of 'Kducation officials welcomed the delegates. Miss Coad, At.A., delivered a presidential -address, in which she pleaded for mere attention to the emotional and civic side of education. Secondary education was an absolute necessity. and could he approved hy more variety of type, the remodelling cd syllabuses and the eliminating of useless materials and improvements in methods of teaching. Patriotism also was a function of social subjects, and the schools could imbue the word with real meaning. AVELLINGTON. May _lo. The annual conference of the 'Women Teachers’ Association was opened today. Tile annual report stated that interest in the Association continues to grow. It. notes that the Department hopes this year to remedy toe evils of staffing infant schools, that classes for retardates are. to be established, and that anomalies in regard to superannuation are being rectified. AVith regard to girls’ schools and women inspectors, the opinion "as expressed that some of the grave problems which now vex the community would be more readily solved il women teachers were given a more direct voice in controlling the education of girls. As to the inspectorships, though vacancies had occurred, no appointments of women had boon made.
