A DARING ROBBERY

A daring robbery, involving the loss 0f*£2750 in notes and silver, was committed at Spencer Street railway offices during the busy part of the morning. Tlio money, which was intended for the pay of tho employees, was carried in a hag by two clerics from the basement of the office, and placed on the counter in charge of one clerk, while tho other left for n. few minutes. A man with a revolver in bis hand, who was amongst the crowd in the office darted forward, flung pepper into tho clerk’s face, seized the bag and ran along tho passage, followed bv a confederate. A porter at the mam door and another employee attempted to stop them, but tho thief levelled a revolver and threatened to shoot. Both men then jumped into a motor car and disappeared at high speed after nearly overturning through colliding with an electric, light standard and a team of horses. The car was later found abandoned in South Melbourne. ODD FELLOWSHIP. SYDNEY May TO. The Grand Sires report at tho triennial conference of the Grand bodge of Australasia of Oddfellows states that tho membership throughout the world in 1921 was 2,(570,.500. At the beginning of 192:5. the Australasian membership was 51,739. The Dominion was now the second largest jurisdiction in Australasia and was also becoming an active patriarchal branch of the order. Tho Grand Encampments will probably be instituted in New Zealand and Victoria inside the year. PETITION DISMISSED. SYDNEY, May 10. It is understood the Miners’ Federation Council advised the miners not to accept tho owners’ terms, especially regarding tho right to engage and dismiss employees. ... , Further trouble is brewing on ihe western fields, owing to the men servingnotice on the owners that there would lie no ««rk on back Saturdays in future. Justice Hibble intimated that ho would not allow such notice. It j, expected the tribunal will intervene and insist on tho award as declared, ])o ing obeyed without additions by either side.
