CANADA AND AUSTRALIA. OTTAWA, May 15
Mr Fielding, in his Budget speech, announced that if Australia would agree to an arrangement bringing her under British preference as concerns tho Canadian tariff, currants and raisins would outer free, and all other Australian products would receive tho same preferential treatment which the British receive. Canada, desired to accord Australia exceptional opportunities for trade with the Dominion bv permitting wool to be exempt from the sales tax. Currants and raisins, under the regulation tariff, will now carry duty increased to three cents per pound. Mr Fielding said the purpose of this is to permit Australia an advantage over other competitors by agreeing to the preference arrangement.
NEWFOUNDLAND ELECTIONS. OTTAWA, May 14
Early returns in connection with the Newfoundland elections indicate that the Squires Government have won 18 seats and the Opposition 13 out of the 3G seats. It is anticipated that Squires will retain control by a majority of 23 to 13.
