The Secretary submitted the following particulars of Kumara transactions for the year ended Alarcli 31, 1923: £ s (i

The valuation of the borough of Kumara was £21,299. It would require a rate of Is 9d to pay for maintenance of O.P. Home, £lB6 13s 3d and would require a rate of 2/0' to pay tor all the pavilion!s made to Kumara lasi year £2132 Is 9d.—Received.

Mr Spiers referring to the proposal to close the Old Peoples' Home at Kumara, said he thought the Hoard had not considered the question Horn all points. He thought a great mistake would be made if they removed it to Hokitika. Had they considered the question of environment. In Kumara the old people could get out down the streets, while if they had the home here they would he wedged in between the Hospital and AI on tit 1 Hospital and would not he able to got into the town if the-,- wanted to. At Kumara they were well looked after.

The Chairman said the matter had been well thrashed out before. The Kumara people were too parochial. Keen the Kumara medical arrangements were apparently going to breakdown. The Hoard had to consider the question of finance and lie referred to Hie statement supplied by the Treasurer as answering that part Hilly.

Air JeiTrios said he totally disagreed with the views ol .Mr Spiers. If the people of Kumara wanted to keep the Old Peoples’ Home there and were prepared to pay for it then he was prepared to let them have it, but if the AVestlam! County and other bodies hail to find the cost then they must consider the whole question ol finance. The Kumara Borough up to this has had the most to say and Westland ( utility the least. Now the reverse was to he the case. They had now to consider the matter as a business principle.

Mr Davidson said Air Spiers was entirely wrong. The site was one of the best in New Zealand. The old people would he as well treated at I Ink Rika as thee were at Kumara.

Air Spiers asked it the Board wen u repared to take a vote ot the in mates.

.Members of the Board at once answered in the negative, and the next business was called. The Hoard rose at 10.13 p.m.
