[BY TELEGRAPH —PF.R PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DEATH OF JOHN FULLER. AUCKLAND, May 10. Obituary.—Mr John Fuller, tlio well known theatrical proprietor; aged 74 years. .MISS PORTER’S DEATH. INQUEST STATEMENTS DENIED. WELLINGTON, May 9. Li connection with the death of "Miss Phyllis Porter, of the "Peep Show” Company, the hospital authorities deny that a telephono message was received at the hospital stating that tlie case was on tlie way to the hospital. The first intimation was received at tne hospital at about 8.30, when a man was asked for a stretcher, stating that a child had been burned. The doer,or went out to tlie motor car, but was told that the patient was in too much pain lo bo examined in the car. At the children’s ward it was found that the patient was an adult, and she was ordered to be taken to ward AM. 2. Tills ward was un not- ifieri of Uic case and on arrival no bed was ready, so the sister in charge, realising that it was an urgent case, sent the patient on to ward A'o. 1, where she could get immediate attention. The patient was in hod at 8.45. Ihe Hospital Board is to thoroughly investigate the circumstance. DEPREDATIONS OF DEER. DEPARTMENT’S LETTER. WELLINGTON, May 10. At a meeting of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society last night a letter was received from the Department of Internal Affairs in reference lo the depredations of deer. The Department stated it realised that the matter was one of greater urgency to smile districts than lo others, and it decided that it was essential that action should lie tak on as scon as possible in regard to the following districts: - -Ashburton, Bullet', Southland, Otago, the Lakes District of Nelson, ’Westland, Wnitaki, North Canterbury and Marlborough, with tlie exception of tlie Rotorua district which would be dealt with by tlie several Departments concerned. It is not considered necessary at present to remove the protection IV.r deer in any Acclimatisation District in the North Island, but warrants to call or destroy deer would be issued to several Acclimatisation Societies. Under that authority the Acclimatisation Societies would be able, not only to carry out the necessary thinning out, but to authorise persons to kill deer and to assist them in the matter where animals were a menanee to property.
SUPREME COURT. AUCKLAND. May 9. At the Supreme Court tq-day. John Marriott was sentenced to two years’ on charges of breaking and entering the Drill Hall, theft, and al-o receiving. Frederick Howard, a waterside worker was charged with having published and publicly exhibited a double chart, and with having carried on the business of bookmnking. His Honour, summing up. said there might he a difference of opinion as to the wisdom of certain legislation, but the court had nothing to do v.itli that. If Parliament passed a. law it was bis duty to administer it. Tlie duty of the jury was equally clear. They were there to return a cm dirt according to their oaths, otherwise the administration of justice would be reduced to a scandal. It was impossible to ainic to anv other i(inclusion than that the accused was guilty of hookinaking. il tuo evidence was to be believed. The Jury returned a verdict of not guilty and accused was (ii -charged.
