The Council's hundred thousand pound loan for the water extension proposal which the preliminary count on the night of the municipal election was declared carried by 20 votes, turns out, on the official recount, to have been lost by 57 votes. A large number of votes tentatively rejected as informal, were accepted on the official scrutiny as valid.
STOKEHOLD CREW FIXED. CHRISTCHURCH, May 2. At Lyttelton, twenty-one members of the stokehold crew of the Dorset were each fined £5 and costs for combining to delay tile departure of the vessel. The men went ashore and some became intoxicated and refused to resume duty or take the steamer to an anchorage. They pleaded that the stokehold complement was short. MAN DROWNED. DUNEDIN, May 3. Yesterday at Port Chalmers, William Porter was seen standing on the halftide bank at Sawyer's Bank Inlet. As he wi's well out towards the navigable channel of the harbour his presence at such a. place attracted attention, and when, without taking off' his wearing apparel he waded into the deeper water and commenced to swim, two young men launched a b at and pulled towards him. When they reached tile place lie had disappeared. It is said that lie has been depressed since the recent death of his eldest son. The body has not been fol'llll.
