The joint committee of the Chamber of Commerce and Progress League considered the shipping disabilities of the South Island. Mr E. IT. Wylcs (chairinan), .said that the matter would be discussed in Parliament when the renewal of the ’.Frisco-Vancouver services came up for consideration. Traders in the South Island should not pay a full share of the subsidy when they had added freight charges. A suh-eommittee was set up to gather information regarding shipping Inanities in the South Island and the goods handled at the various ports. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. WELLINGTON'.! -May 2. The Council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce has elected Mr John Mvers as president, and -Mr S A. Lnliquet as vice president for the ensuing year. A MAN KILT,ED. CHRISTCHURCH, May 2. A man was killed in Lyttelton tunnel at 8.20 n.nr. by the train from O.yttelton to Christchurch. The engine driver felt a hump, but could see nothing in the smoke. A gang went through the tunnel and found the badly mutilated and almost unrecognisable remains of an elderly man, supposed to ho G. H. Parsons, public accountant of Christchurch. It is not known whether he fell off the train or walked into the tunnel. PARLIAMENTARY TOUR. TE KUTTI. May 2. There is splendid weather for the Parliamentary tour. Sixteen visitors arrived on Tuesday morning and visited Rniigitoto district. The visitors avero impressed with the excellent country requiring development. In the afternoon they were driven to Kopaki where they were entertained by residents. To-day they left for Piopio and surrounding districts. CHRISTCHURH COUNCIL. CHRISTCHURCH, May 2. The City Council is completed officially as follows:—Beanlaud, Agar, J. 'Anderson, 0. TV. B. Anderson, AlcKcller, Beaven, Williams, I-eadley, Andrewes, Archer, Armstrong AI.P.. Howard M.P., .Mrs McCombs, Cooke, Carr, Winsor. The first nine are nominees of the Citizen’s Association, the next six are Labour and the last Independent.
