AMUSEMENTS.

“A! A DAME X” TO-NIGHT. At the Princess Theatre to-night Pauline Frederick will tic seen in the great French play “.Madame X.” Some time ago this great play ran successfully through Xew Zealand and Australia. Muriel Star played the leading role. In "Madame X” Pauline Frederick gives the greatest performance of her career I Jacqueline Floriot maintained the sacred traditions <>f motherhood even though the mire of a sordid life retarded her weary footsteps. Her husband, grown in political influence, became t lie judge of a Paris criminal court, and strangely enough Jacqueline’s murder of a blackmailer who would have ruined his career, brought her before his bar of justice for punishment. Another cruel twist of fate and Raymond Floriot. her son, was placed before the bar in her defence. And here the tragic triangle fought i!s pitenus battle. The mother recognised her husband in tin- stern justice before her, but her eyes did not perceive her sen. When the truth came, when her woman’s honour was vindicated, death gave her peace. ‘‘Madante X” is tragedy, but it. is tragedy of (he sort that distills and purifies one’s thoughts and ideals. Pauline Frederick, ns .Jacqueline Floriot, has a role in which she exceeds all her previous efforts. She is at I lie zenith of her art in this masterpiece. A good supporting programme will also he screened.
