The award under which the shearers are working will expire on April ,‘!0, and steps are now being taken by the shearers, shed hands, machine expelts and Crutchers to secure a new award, providing for increases in wages for the whole uf the employees in the, industrial districts throughout the Dominion. At present shearers are paid fits a hundred, but the worker*’ "nion to which the shearers, in common with many classes of pastoral workers are. affiliated, is seeking a rate of 30s a hundred with a -11-hour week. The initial steps are being taken in Marlborough, and a sitting of the Conciliation Council to hear th claims of workers there will he held at Blenheim on May 2d. That portion of the dispute affecting the Wellington district will be heard by o Conciliation Council at Wellington on May 29. Dates have not yet been lixed for the- hearing ol the disputes in Cantt'i bm v. Otago and Northern districts. DENE DIN EXHIBITION. ATTITUDE OF GOVERNMENT. DUNEDIN. April 17. A deputation consisting of the Mayor of Dunedin (Mr J. S. Douglas.) and other members of the .Exhibition t'nmmittee waited on the Prime .Minister at Palmerston to-night and asked for some official recognition of the exhibition to be held in Dunedin in 1923•2(i. The Mayor said lie would like to lie able to announce to the committee that Mr Ma-ey. as head of the Govern inent. had given them some assurance that if Dunedin rose to the occasion it
would lie supported in a worthy manner by the Government. Mr Massey said he did not intend to throw cold water on the proposal, but lie mentioned that they were committed to support- the Imperial Exhibition and were committed to an expenditure of L'tiO.llOO. He concluded: “Please don't ask me for any money just now. Moral support—that’s easy and von won't have any fault to find with the Government on that score." DAIRY CONFERENCE. AIASTERTOX. April 13. A conference convened by the Afa=terton Daisy CYnip-tny. of delegates representing thirteen dairy companies from raliiatua to Fentherston ' v; is held to-day. A proposal to form a controlling as--iation for the whole of the Wairarapa and the Bush districts' was referod to a later meeting at Carterton. Air -T. G. suppliers and the control of shipping thoroughly discussed. Ho explained the attitude of the association on matters pertaining to -dairy control, and urged the conference to push ahead for better conditions 10 place the industry on a sound footing.
