ARTHUR’S PASS TUNNEL TRAFFIC.

GOODS TRANSPORT. A ministerial statement. 11l reply to an enquiry made early last month, the following reply received by the Westland Chamber of Commerce. from the Hon. J .0. Coates,, .Minister of Public Works, dated AA'ellington. March 20t1i., with regard to the use of Arthur's Pass tunnel for goods transport, will he of w ide public interest:

“I have delayed replying to year letter of the 9th. Alareli. in the hope that T may be able to give you some definite information as to the date on which timber etc., will be taken through the Otira tunnel. “Although I am anxious to assist in any way I can. I regret I am unable to arrange early transport owing to the fact that the contractors require uninterrupted use of the tunnel in connection with the completion of their work, while the Rail-

way Department also has- a large amount of gear which lias to he taken through in addition to a quantity of signal equipment to he erected in the tunnel. A'oii may rest assured, however, that the carriage of timber etc., will he commenced as soon as I can arrange for same without delaying the completion of the tunnel and attendant works.”
