DFI’AKTI.XO TEACHERS. (From Our Correspondent). On I’rid,iy at the i’utara Hall a social was held lor the purpose of farewelling two valued and esteemed teachers— Miss Smith who has been associated with the sellout for some years as Infant Mistress, and who has now received promotion to the bluntly school near Auckland, and Mr 0. A. Boyle, who has been headmaster at the Ross school for close on four years and who has now received promotion to the position of Assistant master at Mahora School. Hastings.
Micro was a very large assemblage present, and during the evening the departing guests were invited on to the stage where they were accompanied by - the .Mayor raid Mayoress (Mr and Airs a ,'s. P .Evans), the Chairman and memt her- ol the .school commitee. „ Tim Mayor in addressing the nssembingo stated they had met that evening to say larewei! to two of their teachers 1 -—Miss Smith who was a native of the town was well-known to them all. She • had been connected with their school i lor ipiite a number of years during , which lime Hie had proved herself to he a mi‘-t efficient and successful teacher and was re -peek'll and esteemed by old and young and Ross was linforlunale ill losing her services. Ho would now ask the Mayoress to hand Aliss Smith a little present as a memento to show tin esteem in which she was held by her many admirers (the Mayoress then handed .Miss Smith a purse containing a very substantial sum of money). The Afayor <ontinuing stated Air Hoyle had not been with them so long, but during the few years lie had been in charge of the school he had made a wonderful change and at present the school and siirniiiidings were second to none on the Coast, lie also asked Air Hoyle’s accept a nee of a purse of money which the Afayorcss presented. Mr O.smors, Chairman of the School ( ommittee desired to say a few words. While regretting their departure Irom Ross and the School, he congratulated them both on receiving a well-deserved promotion. Air Boyle* had done excellent work in the school during his term, and had produced wonderful results. lor instance every pupil present- j ci 1 at the recent proficiency examina- | iinn had succeeded in gaining a certifi- j cave. Miss Smith they had known sine.* j childhood, and during her term in the I school had proved herself a horn teach- ! er. especially as an infant teacher, in j addition io her .school work, she had | be .’it a great worker in connection with j all social work of the town, and her 1 loss would lie severely, felt. Rev F. Thorpe endorsed the remarks ”1 the previous speakers. Speaking a« ! a parent of pupils attending the school he hilly appreciated the splendid work j of both .Miss Smith a.nd Air Boyle, lie j also wished to recognize Miss Smith’s j work in connection with St Paul’s j ( iiuroh. of which she was a loyal and \ staunch member. She had been Superinendent nl the Sunday School for the past eight, years, and lie thanked her i for her valuable assistance in coimec- I tion with same, lie wished the guests siu ee-s in their future work. (In behalf of Aliss Smith and himself. Air (K----tuers presided ami with him on tin stage were representatives of the various sporting clubs. The Chairman said he had a pleasing duty to perform, to make a presentation to AIK- Evanwho was leaving iio.-s to take up a position in Wellington. This was another young lady whom they could ill afford to lose, as Aliss Evans, who w.ihad given her services freely to all soria! functions whenever required. Sin had been a great patron ol .sport, always willing to a* t a~ gate-keeper ami in any other capacity in which -In could assist the various clubs. Mr (Kmers (Chairman of the School Committee! prc-hled and in opening the proceedings stated that the public bail nlrcadv made their presentation, hut the children felt that they would like to slum thoir appreciation of their teach, rs in their own way. He was certain that the children ail regretted the departure of Aliss Smith and Air Boyle as they had proved themselves painstaking and conscientious in their endeavour to advance the scholars. Ali-s Frances Chapman, on behal: ~t the pupils then read an address to Mi-- Smith, and asked her acceptance e,f a suit case as a slight token of appreciation to show the esteem in which -he was held by her pnpids. Master Howard Al nil then read an address io Air Boyle and asked his acciptauco of a similar present. Air R. Lucas, one of the pupils in a ihort extempore speech voiced the regret of the pupils at the loss of their two popular teacners. and wished them every success and happiness in then-
new homes. Aliss •Smith and Air Boyle each responded. thanking the pupils for thenkind word- and valuable gifts, and asked the pupils to accord to the incoming teachers the same measure ot help that had always been accorded them.
