AUSTIIA MAN ANO N.Z. CABI.K ASSOCIATION. A GAOL MYSTERY. SUPPOSED SOLUTION. ME!, BOURNE, April 2. Officials are convinced that the systery surrounding the sensational escape of the notorious convict Frederick Clarke, from the Geelong gaol in 1839 has been solved. While prisoners were clearing too prison ground, they discovered a huge bra - s key. which proved to lie a master key for every lock in the gaol at the time of Clarke s escape. Clarke was transported to \ an Diemen’s Land in 1847, and died in Geelong at the age of fifty-seven. He had a record of sentences totalling eightyseven years for various crimes. WOOD-CHOPPING. Appo won the fifteeninch standing chop easily in lmin -Msec beating Dudley, tho Tasmanian champion, by fit teen seconds. The first prize in the novice equestrienne contest went to Miss Biigeof New Zealand.
