These and lesser perils all through our history have taught us that it is the Navy whereon, under the good providence of God, the wealth, safety and strength of the Kingdom chiefly depend. Not on the Royal Navyalone but on the Merchant Navy as well, so'bur fathers taught in the fight against the Armada, and so we have been taught by our own experience. Yet we are in continual danger of forgetting the lesson. —The Duke of Sutherland.
