Outside interest is being manifested in the project, every mail bringing letters of enquiry. As soon as the space plans are available representatives of the Council are to vi- i t all the towns on the ( oast, and as tar north as Nelson and Blenheim to enlist -ui>port from the local bodies and exhibitors in the various places. The plans will supply the means to alford the fullest information to the interested public, and the di-trihution wcU m advance will all’ord the time fm ample 1 reparation of exhibits. It is expected that mechanical exhibits relating to machinery will he a lenture ol the Exhibition, ami Mr G. Davidson, a member of the Council, who is now in the North I-laml, is going into the matter while absent on a health trip. The interest in the success of the Exhibition promises to he a rapidly growing quantity, and the townspeople artfully alert to the importance of tingreat occasion. Tin; increasing number of visitors to Hokitika of late lias drawn attention to the need for the principal thoroughfares hearing the name of the streets at corners where traffic is general. Lately the Secretary of the Otago Expansion League visited here, and in a pamphlet lie published of his trip to this side of the ranges ho makes reference to the matter and remarks how necessary the information is for casual visitors' information. Lust- week a proniineni ('hri.-u hull h citizen was here, and lie. too. -poke of ike need for the names ol the streets id be displayed in pioininelit places. These criticisms indicate that the town is forging ahead. More people are coming into it; more people are making it their headquarters for district tours. The demand for the convenient improvement mentioned is a sign of the limes. We recall that Mi Davidson mentioned the matter some little time ago at a meeting of tile Hokitika Beautifying Society hut the suggestion was thought to he premature. Like most improvement:!, however, it is never too soon to begin, and this is evidently a case in point. Had Air Davidson s advice been taken, the recent complaints above referred to would not have been brought up. Hokitika can now well afford to attend to these small matte: s. the sum of which adds so greatly to the civic amenities of the town. Those in authority might well take up the matter iu earnest.

Tor Guardian appears in an enlarged form to-day. This E in keeping with the expanding times. The length and breadth of the new sheet lias been increased, with the result that about thirty-five extra columns of matter will appear weekly. This extra accommodation will afford increased space for many matters in regard to which the restricted room prevented full treatment. The paper desires to continue its service to promote the general welfare of the district and on that- account realises that there must be greater opportunity to recount the progress of Westland. Subseriheis and advertisers can help hy maintaining their patronage and encouraging the proprietors to still further improve the paper for the good it can do. The time is near at hand when, there will he more and more necessity for a larger paper, and the Guardian will continue to rise to the occasion as circuibstane.es warrant. This first step, we hope, is but preliminary to a larger effort in the not distant future. The printing plant has lately been overhauled and added to. and the office now "has good capacity for local demands. A\ ith encouraging patronage from the business people the aim will he to the_ Guardian better equipped tFxpferY o serve the very risinjt part of Ne”’
