Wniotuhi, said he considered that Captain Burke would be justified in running on, instead of heaving to, if he thought he was getting near to North Cape, under the weather conditions prevailing that night. The ease was adjourned. (The Edna was wrecked on Puringa Heads about the end of January. She had a consignment of goods aboard for Grcymouth). STRANGE FATALITY. AUCKLAND, March 19 Alfred Smith, a man who was found shot in a shooting gallerv here, died under peculiar circumstances. Details show that Smith had become despondent after receiving some letters and telegrams. He fired 12 shots at the miniature range. The attendant, whose attention had been diverted, then 'found him on the floor with a shot jit his skull, just above the right ear. YOUNG MAN SUICIDES. BLENHEIM. -March 20. Doughty Wastnoy, aged 50 and single last seen'alive on Thursday last was found dead in a hut at 1* inline Valley, IVlnrus, with a bullet wound m lus forehead. A revolver with one cartridge expended was m lit band. IK left a note staling that il was In- intention to commit suicide. salutary sentences. GISBORNE. March 20. At the Supreme Court. Frances Quinn charged with manslaughter and procuring abortion, was sentenced to seven years reformative detention. Albert Ernest Harrison, charged with counselling, aiding and abetting Mrs Quinn to procure abortion was sentenced to five years imprisonment. Justice Reed congratulated the juries on the findings which had wiped out an unclean spot iu Hie town. If all juries would do their duty in the same manner, they would soon bear less of this class ot case
