The City Council by twelve notes to nine declined to rescind tlie,motion appointing .Mr Xorinan Weeks, of England, as City Surveyor. The Lord Mayor, in a lengthy statement, said Mr Bush, of Auckland, possessed the best qualifications for the post, but. tie was not given a fair chance. Prior to the last Council meeting ATr Bush topped the preliminary ballots, hut at the last moment somebody claiming to ]«> recently arrived from Auckland, circulated statements reflecting on Mr Bush. A landslide followed, resulting in Mr Bush's exclusion. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the Mayor said he was afraid to recommend a decision for fear the Council would appoint- a third candidate, who would be a reproach to the Council and. citizens. Alderman Thompson and Sir Allen Taylor also favoured Mr Bush, but with the Mayor voted against a recission.
STEAMERS BURNED. SYDNEY, March 14 Fire practically destroyed the collier Duroby, lying in Double Bay, and severely damaged the collier Eden, which was' moored alongside. The- damage has not been estimated.
