Mr Blank said he understood that in mined ion with the proposed F.xliibn tion, it was suggested the taking in part of Macatulrow Square to he utilised for building operations. He ohieeted t« tins proposal, and he also thought that, the Council should have 1P0,.nl P o,.n approached for permission in connection Willi the row-, Ifa-11. Mr Wood endorsed the remarks ot M, Blank, stating Marandivw Square was a memorial to l)r. Maeandrou arid many ratepayers oh meted to it being interfered with. Mr Lloyd said ii was proposed Jn take in portion of Coin Street. Ybv could they not take in the wlmle of the stred and not interfere with M i .v.tdivw Square. Tie Mayor said Here was no motion I, o foro the Council, and '‘ •> M-'lUu: dropped. TOWN HALT. AND THEATRE. M; Wornl said he would like to come again lo the attack on the proposal to raise a loan to erect a nev Town Hall and Mt'tiivip'i! Theatre. He ;| skeo leave lo move, without notice on the subject. Leave was giimlcd.

Mr Wood then moved that a proposal be placed b’lure the ratepa’.eis when the tuunicina! elections take place

in borrow the sum ,4 £O.OOO tor the • cnose ~f erecting a new T'vu Hall

and Municipal Theatre, the interest thereon not to exceed with a sinking fund of £2OO per year such loan to be secured by a sueeially annually recurring rate of 2.’d in the pound, over a period of thirty years. He |v*itiled out that at tic last municipal election- an itilunmd poll on the sp' ject w■- agreed to by the ratepayer-. Mr Lloyd seconded the in-linn. He anprove ! of Hie pm-a -el. The ralepavers had agreed lo the pr u n-a! v,-''eu nut before them inform.d|- . and he laid no doubt they they would a "'oe to if.

Mr Blank asked if the question of a site had been agreed on. That would

lie one of the burning questions to decide.

Mr Wood said the question of a site would be for the ratepayers to decide, after the loan was agreed to. Mr Perhnm thought if the ratepayers had any money that they wanted to spend they should go in for some improvements to the streets and drains qf the town. These were in a disgraceful condition and urgently needed more attention, before they thought of spending money on a new town hall. He did not absolttely veto the proposal but before he could give it favourable consideration he would have to lie supplied with a lot of particulars as to the design and eost of the proposed structure, the general expenditure involved and the possible receipts. Until such detailed information was given he would oppose the proposal, and the question of a suitable site and the cost of it was also a matter for careful consideration.

Mr Pilkington agreed that the town deserved a better Town Hall and Thcatrt accommodation than it bad. but it appeared (lie matter should be put before the ratepayers much more fully than il had been, before asking them to vole on tile proposal. They should have a design and estimate of eost. and aKo suggestions of site for decision Ly the ratepayers. Personally lie was not opposed to the proposal for a Town Hall, if the full particulars necessary were first supplied. Mr Wood said he would like some finality, ns if the Council turned il down, then private enterprise would take it up. Mr Perry approved of the suggested new Town Mall, but the proposal was too nebulous to put L-fore the ralepayers. and on that ground be would vote against the motion. He tlmuclil they should hold it over for tile next Council (n deal with and put in proper form for the '•■nisideralion of the rate-

payers at a later date. The motion was put olid lest - Ayes: Messrs Wend, King and Lloyd. Noes: Messrs Blank, Pilkington, Perliam I’arkliill and Mayor. The Council r-"se at 9 p.m.
