LATE LOCALS.
Last evening Air Jas O’Brien, ALP., received the following wire, from the Minister of Railways:—“Your telegram received, with reference to the opening function of the Otira Tunnel. I am obtaining full information and report in connection with the matter.
end shall hr pleased to confer with my colleague, the TTon J. G. Coates, Alinister of Public Works, on bis return to Wellington.— D. H. Guthrie..” Air O’Brien wired Air Guthrie asking that the Railway Department grant free trains from all the A Vest Coast hri'iirhes of the railway to Otira on the day of the official opening, and also that free trains for the children !»:• j granted for a day following the official j opening. The floral display organised by Air A. B. Boyd as a benefit for the Robert Burns’ Alcmorial fund proved to he quite worth while. The exhibition of ; cut blooms was a surprise to all the j visitors who marvelled that so com-j plete a show could be made at such j short notice and without special preparation. The local growers arc to Iv I complimented on their success, and the : exhibits of the visitors were certainly a. most commendable portion of the display. Air Boyd has every reason, to be gratified with the quality of (lowers tlie exhibition brought out, and in more than one quarter the request for the , revival of the annual flower, fruit and 1 vegetable exhibition was to be beard. Tltc attendance yesterday afternoon was very fair, but that at night was by no means large—this notwithstanding the presence of an orchestral qnar- ; tette which rendered a very pleasing , musical programme. The performers wore: Aliss Alncfarlane (piano). Air Bonnetti (violin). Air Christensen (cornet) Mr Gifford (bass). The party ! rendered several selections, all of which were applauded heartily. In addition Air Bonnetti rendered a. violin .solo, Aliss D. Slmnd was heard in a pleasing vocal solo, and ATiss Alva Mclntosh gave a clog dance. The accompanists j wore Airs Houston and Aliss J. ATcTti- I tosh. The ladies in charge of the stalls; and tlie refreshment apartment were; very attentive to their patrons, and j the afternoon ten and supper wore well : patronised. A competition for a large cake was won by Airs Penrose, a visi- ; tor. The receipts for the day were ; about £2l. The Committee in charge i of the memorial fund are much indebt- j od to Alt- Boyd for promoting the fum -I tioii. to the exhibitors who co-operated, ' to tlie performers who helped with tfi" concert programme, to tfie ladies and gentlemen wlio assisted in various ways. ! and to the Borough Council and staff I in connection with the use of the Town Hall. _
