A meeting of ladies was hold at the Town Hall yesterday afternoon regarding tt. proposal to hold a bazaar and sale of work in aid of the funds of the Hokitika Beautifying Society. The Hon H. L. Michel presided. There were present: Mesdames Michel, CoulH,ii. Butler. Irvine. Pilkington. Morgan. Benjamin. MeWhirter, Bennett. Wilson and Miss Evans. Tin Chairman said the Society was in need of a substantial amount of funds to carry on. The money raised last year was now nearly exhausted. It bad been used to good effect and tlie work of the Society was generally appreciated. A bazaar had boon suggested for the first week in June. It. was resolved to apply for tho stli and 6th of that month as suitable dates, the function to be held in Princess Theatre. The Chairman indicated Mrs Staveley was willing to help with the entertainment, which she thought might take the form of it May Queen carnival. Mrs Stavelev would organise, that portion of the entertainment- and attend to its production. The offer was accepted with cordial thanks. The following stalls etc were fixed upon :—Produce, Mesdames Bennett, Morgan. Irvine. Beniamin and Pilkington ; Refreshments, Mrs McWhirtier. Miss Evans and helpers: Work Stall. Mesdames Michel, Wilson. Coulson and Butler: Sweets. Mrs Urquhart and helpers: Juvenile Stall. Mrs Barrowman and Miss Wallace; Men’s Stall, (sporting dubs). Messrs Heenn.it. Tooliey. and King; Hon Sec. Mr J. Niven. The Chairman expressed his gratification at the good attendance and hearty co-operation of the ladies, whom he thanked for their attendance. From the interest displaced it would appear the bazaar will be well prepared for and when, it eventuates will be a pronounced success. A number of novelties for old and young are to be arranged for, and there is the promise of a fine supply of goods, including plenty of variety.
Tho Banks in Hokitika will observe a special holiday on Wednesday, March 14th (A. and P". Show day). Saturday, March 17th (St Patrick’s Day), u'lll also be observed as a holiday.

At the Town Hall to-morrow nigut m conjunction with tho flower display, there will be a promenade concert in which pleasing vocaf s *and instrumental numbers will be rendered. The orchestral music will be a feature of the programme to be submitted.
There was a very good attendance at Princess Theatre last night, downstairs being crowded and upstairs well patronised for the benefit tendered by .Mrll. McLean to the Hokitika Beautifying Society. The Municipal Band rendered a programme prior to tho screening of the pictures. The film; shown last night proved very enjoyable. I A Pa the Gazette was of special interest and there was a very humorous comic. The star picture was a thrilling story of the sea. At the interval Hon. H. L. Michel, president of the Society in very cordial terms returned thanks to the audience for the patronage extended and to Mr McLean for bis generous action in tendon ing the benefit. The hand parade «as appreciated also. On Friday night McLean's pictures will be continued and a special programme is to 1* shown.
A meeting was held in the Bowling Club’s pavilion last evening of lady supporters and members in connection with the Gala Day to ho held on Saturday. March 24th. in aid of tlie Club’s funds. The President (Mr IV. Braddon) presided, over a good attendance. Matters in connection with the day were discussed, and were reported to he progrssiiig satisfactorily. The ladies present were appointed a committee with power to add to their number to arrange for the general stall, afternoon tea. and iollie stall. Tho President expressed pleasure at the hearty maim;-a in which tlie ladies were taking up their honorary duties, which augured well for the .success of the afternoon. A number of donations worn received with thanks, and the ladies’ committee. consisting of Mesdames Braddon. Stevenson. Thompson, Benjamin. Morgan. \V. Wilson and Blank, will he glad to receive further donations ol anv kind to assist in the object in view. Tlie meeting then adjourned with a vote of thanks to the chair.

Ibe lecturer gave a. vivid glimpse of the conditions under which millions are living in India. Particulars wore given of the work of he Zenana. Bible and Medical Mission among those people, and of her travels through the length and breadth of India, with its swarming millions. The lecturer was assisted by Rev Pur- < has who threw on the screen a. number of excellent illustrations ol Indian life and its people. Miss Lilly referring in detail to the various phases of life ot the brown-skinned people.
