BURNED IN lIIS HOUSE. THAMES. Feb 24
At the inquest on Edward Arthur whoso body was tound burned in his dwelling, a letter found in an outbuilding was read, indicating an intention to commit suicide. A verdict of .suicide whilst insane was returned.

The hudv of Hultert Charles Cliinuery .room steward, on IT.M.S. Chatham. was found on the rocks at Devonport. Apparently he had fallen from the promenade and been drowned. De-ef-a.sed was a single man with relative- - in London.
heavy rain in north. PAHIATUA. Feb. 24
Heavy ruin caused several washouts at Re.hiatiia. The water is three feet over the road at Manggaramarama and the traffic is blocked at Time. The chairman and four members of the Tararna Power Board were unable to get to the meting at Eketahuna, owinf in washouts. PALMERSTON N.. F«>b. 21.
A heavy downpour of rain was experienced'here this morning, one and a-half inches of rain falling in little over an hour. Parts of the Square are Hooded, but no material damage has been recorded. CARTERTON, l ob. 21 A deluge of rain last night, caused tin* Wailiine River to overflow the bank and the road between Carterton and Grevtown is now impassable. Settlers houses at Ahiakonka are surrounded by inundated paddocks. The Woodside River overflowed into the water race headworks and flooded, a large area. In Wairnrapa the rifle meeting at T’apawai was postponed, the butts being quite unworkable. Bowling and tennis and" all other sports were abandoned. The rivers are still rising rapidly and the rainfall continues. No serious damage is reported, so far.
