A curious phenomenon is being experienced in connection with the rates of the Masierton County Council. Last year at this time, though things were anything but good for the farmers generally, only L’-lOfl of rates was outstanding. To-day with a very great improvement all round in the financial position of the ratepayers, there is £•■,00(1 outstanding.
The liuingalma Times reports; Word from the Pig River district conveys the pleasing information that stone was struck in one of the tunnels now being driven on the North Big River Company’s ground. The reef formation is five feet wide and carries three feet of solid stone, in which gold can lie soon freely, and the stone looks well. This is in the vicinity of the New Big River .Mine, being only a little distance away. At the New Big River Mine the drive at No. 12 level (192.1 feet deep) to intersect the reef iis now going ahead well, and the country is looking very favourable.
At Wellington on Saturday morning members of the Executive ami their wives met to make a wedding present to Miss Massey. The gift took the form of a silver teaservice and salves of King James design, with Chippendale edgings. The presentation was made by the Hon Sir Francis Bell, who said that members of the Ministry desired to show their interest in the union that was about tV» take place.
