A BLACK OUTLOOK. LONDON. Feh. IS. Air Sanders, addressing the Lincolnshire farmers, said : —The tanners cannot continue producing at a loss all over the world hut the evil must remedy itself. It was useless to consider heroic measures like subsidies and protective duties on food-stuffs. The last Government had found this so expensive that it had to drop it. They had to recognise many people’s almost fanatical opposition to protection. He did not believe the House of Commons would pass subsidies. The prices of cereals were low because their surplus production must he reduced before a reasonable price could again he readied. The Government wanted the agricultural communities’ solid hacking, in order substantially to help farmers as regards the rates. The Marquis of Exeter declared the death duties were ruining the countryside. They were the chief cause of the rural depopulation
