Obliged to postpone his marriage as he was unable to find an apartment, Josef Franz, aged 28. decided to asphyxiate with coal gas the inmates of his stepmother’s apartments including the sister of his fiancee and himself. The attempt failed. Not to he baulked he armed himself with a razor, and almost severed the heads of his stepmother and sweetheart. He also mortally wounded her sister, and then hanged himself to a doorpost.
