A member of the British "Delegation is staying on at Lausanne in case the Turks give way, or want further technical information. Pending signatures being appended to a Treaty, the terms of the Mudaida Conference will remain in operation. Tsmct Pasha, however states that the Mlidania terms cannot continue for ever, as they are terribly expensive for Turkey. Asl ERICA AND TURKEY. NEW YORK. February 5. The “New York Times” Washington correspondent says: ’I he breakup of tlic Lausanne Conference is a matter of concern to the United States which is hesitating to begin negotiations for a separate treaty with the Turks. It is pointed out that a separate treaty would weaken England s position in reference to Tureky, while France would be strengthened. Tt is probable that at to-morrow’s meeting of the Senate, the Committee on Foreign Relations will ask the Secretary for State. Mr Hughes, to appear in order to obtain a survey of the world s situation from the United States viewpi jut. Meanwhile Senator Borah is holding his economic conference resolution in abeyance, pending developments. FRENCH PRESS COMMENT. (Received tiiis dav at 8.30 a.ro.) PARTS Fell 6. M. Bompard has arrived from Lausanne. Ho says the Conference was interrupted. hut not finally ruptured. The newspapers welcomed Ismet’s reported change of attitude, regarding it .as a tribute to British immovability in the face of repeated intense efforts to divide the • Allies .and pointing out that IsmetAs intractability increased with every rumour of Anglo-French disunion. The “Petit Parisien” says if peace is eventual!v reached it will he due to the fact that the Entente is not dead.
