The bad weather on Saturday morning culminated in terrific downpour shortly before noon, lasting a quarter of an hour. -Mr V. Alburn’s Advance gelding, Fore, the winner of a large number of trotting races, was destroyed on Thursday in a paddock at Soldiers’ Creek. 'The gelding, who had not been trained since lie broke down in Reefton a couple of years ago, had been used by Mr E. Loughnan as a hack, but latterly bis feet got into so bad a state that it was deemed a merciful act to destroy him. A friendly bullet therefore put an end to the animal’s sufferings.
The report of the Pensions Commission which sat some months ago was mentioned at a meeting of the Advisorv Board of the Federation of Patriotic and War Relief Societies at Wellington on Friday. The Southland delegate, Mr 11. ,7. Farrant, said that the report had not yet been made public. It. concerned the board and the activities of various societies very closely, and it was desirable that they should see it. as soon as possible. Colonel Row said that the report had been received by the Prime Minister but had not been published, and he did not think it would he. The board decided to ask for publication of the report as soon as available. Mr Massey states that the report of the Pensions Committee will not he published until it is laid on the table of the House, and that- it is not yet decided whether it will lie presented ‘during the session which opens on Wednesday. Legislation needed to give eflect to the lecommendations will he submitted after the report has been tabled.
