Heel ton on Wednesday afternoon between 2.30 and 3.30 experienced one of the most violent thunder, lightning, and hail storms yet recorded in the district. Some of the hail stones w< r-' as large as pigeon's eggs, and the impact with the roadway split some stones. The violence of the -storm caused considerable apprehension, and there was general relief when the visitation had ended. The enquiry into the death of William Henry Newlands, a railway surfaceman. who, while travelling on a jigger, was run down and killed by_ till engine, was concluded at Wanganui on Wednesday. The engine was travelling silently oil a down grade through hill cuttings, and New lands had his bark to the locomotive. The Coroner, Mr .)• S. Barton, was of opinion that the regulations were sufficient it fully carried out, hut, as often happened, there had been a slackening in the observance on the part of those whom they were designed to protect. He was of opinion that something more might he designed to provide additional protection in tuture.
