The seamen’s dispute is regarded by the Shipowners' Federation as definitely over, an assurance having been given that the union members will accept employment with the men now employmi on the ships. This assurance was conveyed to the Prime Minister’s private su-retary to-day by telephone, in response to an inquiry: “Are the members of the Seamen’s Union willing to work with the free labour which up to the present has been employed on the boats.” Mr Young, Secretary of the Seamen’s Union replied:—“The members of the Union would present themselves to till vacancies as they occurred on the .ships - , and members of the Seamen’s Union were willing to work with any men at present employed on the ■ships.” This assurance was not given till mid-day. Imt as soon as i-t. was received. the shipowners intimated a. willingness to accept the guarantee. Engagements- have commenced, hut there are not many vacancies at present. THE SUSPENDED ACT.
