iIAWERA, Jan. 22. Heavy rain fell all night. Four and a-quarter inches of rain was recorded in 21 hours. A slip has occurred on the railway near Manutahi. Difficulty is being experienced in clearing it, as the earth continues slipping down as fast as it is removed. The mail train was held up tit Hawera, leaving at 2.30. Passengers will lie transhipped. The weather is non line, but further min is threatening. The riversnro till high. NELSON, Jan. 22. Heavy rains have caused floods in the low-lying portions of the town. The rivers are in heavy flood. Considerable damage has been done to the crops. A large landslip ha.- come down on the (Honhope lailway line. Gangs of tueu. are engaged in clearing it away. AUCKLAND. Jan. 22. A thunderstorm passed over the city carle this morning. One house owned by Mr Limnoltifi tit Edendale, was struck by lightning. The current apparent, lys truck vhe building under the eaves, ’ tearing off the weatherboards. j entering a room, and causing a slight explosion of gas. Fairly extensive damage to the woodwork was caused by the lightning, and a curtain wa burnt. Four children in an adjoining room escaped unhurt. AUCKLAND, Jan. 22. The residence of 11. E. Wade, at Papa loci oe, was struck by lightning this morning. Nearly all the windows in the house were broken. Another house, was struck. It want Ellerslio, being the Yiearage occupied bv the Rev C. L. Tube. The telephone'wires outside the house were fused, ami the Haines ran down the wall, but the only effect was the scorching of the weatherboards.
