All through the present financial year the figures in relation to the New Zealand railways have shown an improvement upon the corresponding figures last year, and the returns published, in last night’s “Gazette” indicate that tlm improvement is being substantially maintained. The figures given are for the period up to December 9tli. ILL The expenditure during the latter period is £325,000 more than it was in 1921. Oil the South Island lines the receipts are exactly £137 higher than for the previous year in round figures, the same, which is rather a coincidence in such big figures. There is. however, a vast improvement oil the exp"iidit ure -ide relatively, for whereas m 1921 expenditure exceeded receipts by £215.787. fur 1922 the receipts were £15.175 better than the expenditure.
