The Hokitika Guardian MONDAY, JANUARY 15th 1923. POSITIVE ACTION.
It is goes! tu note that the Mayor and the councillors generally have expressed their approval of the ir.urdctpa' Fan on wjneh a yof* is to bp Fd'yti
next Friday. It is not unsatisfactory either, that n .note of opposition was ‘■l.nicli in tin 1 discussion at the Coim;:1 table, because the difference of opinion will raise a general discussion which will be helpful in clearing np various aspect- <>l the proposal, The money proposed it> he rnlseclj ii the » loan is sanctioned by the ratepayers tiii Friday next, is to he devoted to drainage and street improvements. The former should ho adapted to a sanitary scheme of winch ihe Council has data lit hand already. The street improvement works will not he cavilled at. because the streets themselves are crying out fur attention. As regards the drainage, it is proposed in the main to tap the Hood waters which recur in the back part of the town. What the Connell has done hv (lie Hull Street drain Inis been of great service iit that direction hid tiie drain iii mind, is not adaptable to sanitary drainage. It iln* new works to he taken in hand on the loan being adopted are undertaken with an idea of being also sanitarily effective, the money can ho must us'liilly cxi pended. The non Council will he dctil--1 ing with this aspect, and ii will he 1 for the Council, after the ratepayers I have sanctioned the loan, to see that I the motley is usefulh applied in that direction. If this were hettei understood we believe the opposition, sucli as it is to the loan proposals, would largely disappear and that the lead given by the .Mayor and members of the Council in the mutter will he I<>l- - by the electors on I'iiday next. In agreeing to place the proposals before the electors, the Council to astertain extent pledged itself to the town. Having therefore committed ilselt to such acli ni, tlm Council is now very properly follov. jug up the matter In calling a public meeting and issuing a circular to the ratepayers. It will he tisofui propaganda and must entry a good deni of weight. As to the general aspect, the ratepayers will have in mind the present prospects of lire town. They are very promising. It is not possible to contemplate the future without realising that within a year's time the town will occupy a more us sored place in the Dominion than it does to-day. The citizen's realise Ill's . Ihey are showing it liv their actions. The business people realise it, and they are preparing for tile better dtr ahead. Just as the individuals are lowing nut to meet the incoming ship Yclept prosperity, so collectively the municipality should likewise prej are for the lietler times ahead. There will lie a larger population here, there will be a greater volume of touring traffic. The town will be livelier by the in- 1 creasing commerce to result from the extra population settled and floating, and the town must needs he set in order. The residential portion of the town is spreading, and more and more room will lie requited for building. The loan money will assist in opening up some of the back portions of the town which are growing in favour as residential sections. There is thus every encouragement to support the loan proposals and provide ways and means to make Hokitika bigger, brighter mid bettor.
