FRIDAY. JANUARY 12th
The Council met at 8 p.m. Present —Alessrs CL A. Perry (Mayor). Conlsoii, King. Pilkington, Blank, Parkhill Ale Gregor. and Lloyd. An apology was made for the absence of Air Wood. The minutes were confirmed and coirespomlcnce outward was approved. I VOTE OF SYMPATHY. i The .Mayor referred to the death of Mr Andrewes, wife of the down C.eiv in very feeling terms and moved that ! the Council convey to Air Andrewes and familv their very deepest sympathy in the sad loss they had sustained. The Council rose and passed the .motion in silence. Air Andrewes brieily acknowledged the reference. inward correspondence. i 11l connection with the outward correspondence, the Council resolved to give notice to Mr Pcdder to remove a wooden box drain, put in without authority and replace it with a pipe drain. 1 From R. i r . Secretary Riinanga l’ienie Committee asking for use of Cass Square oil Saturday January 27th.—Received: The Town Cleik reported that after correspondence with the Grey Wateisiders Committee the rc'iuost of the Rnirangn Committee had been agreed to. j From Salvation Army asking for l'oI mission from rates as other religious . bodies.-■ Received and agreed to. From F. .McGregor notifying sale of section, Re veil Street to Air Wright. - Received. From AV. J: Marks. asking for crossing to flow residence .upper Hampden Street. Received and agreed to on usual terms. From A'iedieal Officer of Health, reporting nuisance in l’evell Street, and asking for extension of sewer to enable a connection to he made, and so abate the nuisance.—Received; Air. Lloyd stated that arrangements had been made to connect up with the sewer, lmt these had not given effect to. Tt was resolved to give notice to the occupier to remove cowshed.

were passed for pavment PUBLIC WORKS COAIAIITTEE. 1 have the honour toe report that at a meeting of tho Public Work’s Committ'co held on the 10th idem., it was decided to recommend that the owners of the following business places be notified that as from the Ist. April their water-supply will be registered by meter on the same terms and conditions as J. Mandl’s and Co., via.:—The meters to he supplied and installed by the Council at the cost of the consumer (hi the. charge to he at the rate of Is per 1000 gallons for all water registered by the meter, viz ; ilavies’ Brewery. KortegastV Cordial Factory. Robinson and Sons Cordial Ractovy. Clement’s .Motor Garage. —Received. OVERSEER'S REPORT. 1 beg to submit the following report mi work done during the past: month. Owing to had weather we were unable to start a general clean up for the holidays as soon as usual, and on till account we had not sufficient time to finish more than the principal blocks. Hampden Street, has been gravelled •iml holes filled to the Eastern boundary. also Stafford Street. Fitzherbert lias been attended to a, good coat ol grave] being required on the section adjoining the Railway Station. Wold and several other streets have liad holes filled where required. On January Bth. owing to shorta " of water in the Reservoir we made an examination of the pipe lino from reservoir to Lake Kanieri and located several leaks, tlie principal one at Tucker’s Flat had the appearance of being deliberately broken with some blunt instrument, the wire and part of the stave being driven partly in, we stopped the leak and strengthened the pipe with a band, but I think it will he advisable to replace it with a new pipe wlieii the reservoir fills. During tlie month we have made about ! chain concrete pipes. The usual street cleaning has also been attended to. Received.
From Manager of Abattoirs (Mr .1 Jarman) reporting for December there were examined In cows. 13 heifers. 83 bullocks. 3fiß sheep. 201 lambs, 1-1 pigs, fl calves. Condemned 1 sheep. Fees for period £B-1 Is.. -Received. DOC REGISTRATION.
The Mayor moved that the registration of dogs for the year be fixed at 10s and 2s Od for cattle dogs. Seconded by Air Llovtl and carried. TENDERS FOR GRAVEL.
Only one tender was received, from .7. Cameron tit 4s per load, delivered on Cass Square. Mr Lloyd moved that consideration he held over. Seconded hv Afr Coulson arid carried.
Air Blank asked that the footpath alongside the eastern side of Cos* Squire receive attention. Afr AfeOregor supported. Afr Coulson said he was of opinion the roadway should Fie opened. Afr Blank moved that the footway he repaired. Seconded by Afr T.loyd and carried.

Afr Coulson suggested that in view of the importance of the coming 1rough loan that the Afavor call a public meeting to address the ratepayers on the urgency <■* the matter, and nhee the proeosab fully before the public. .Mr Berry said he thought the suggestion a proper one and he would do so. Afr Pilkington approved and said the meeting should he called and also a circular sent cult. Afr King sat’d he could mu support the loan, because he was of cninion the amount' would pot he trenf to the
ftdvitlltage of the town. He felt £3,300 of the £6,000 was not properly ear-marked for expenditure. Afr Ale Gregor expressed surprise at the attitude of Mr King. The town required the expenditure for the improvement of the conditions in the town. He urged a circular he sent to everv ratepayer in the town. The Atayor said they were committed to . the loan and would try to put it through. He would call a public meeting as requested. The matter was a very simple one, and included drainage and street improvement. Ifci did not think as a whole that the townspeople would object to tjjy raising of a loan. He would agree to call a meeting as loquested and would announce tie,' date later. deputation. A deputation consisting of Kjafte-i-angi settlers, lessees of the Borough Endowment Reserve. Messrs P. Antherger. H. Monk. J. Fleming. AY. Dintmick and J. Cropp waited on the Council to discuss the question of the renewal of their leases, the terms and conditions. The Council resolved intd ! Committee to discuss the matter. It was pointed out that there was some | considerable misunderstanding as to the | conditions for the renewal for the l'urj ther period of 21 years to which thejy j were entitled under their leases, with , the > mount of rent which should bo ! charged. 1 After a lengthy discussion the Alayor suggested that the rent- by in- ■ creased by one third, with a right to renewal for further periods at the end of 21 years. After further discussion the matter was left to the Council to make oh--quirk's and the host terms possible. _ Air Fleming expressed thanks to the y Council for the hearing given and the deputation then withdrew.
