LIBERAL PROSPECTS.
“A GOOD OMEN.”
PREPARE FOR THE FUTURE
The deputation representing seventeen electorates in the Auckland Province that waited on the Leader ot the Opposition was a good omen for the success of Liberalism in the coming year (says the Auckland “Star ’ in an editorial). Tt shows that Liberalism is very far from being dead, hut that on the' contraiy. there is widespread support for Liberal _ principles and desire, for a more efficient party organisation. Air Wilford’s statement to the deputation was a sound review of the ixilitie.nl situation and a valuable reiteration of political truths, lie made the point this paper has often made, that Liberalism is inclusive and not exclusive, that it stands between tw<> extremes each of which is repieNcntative of class and not of community. We do not believe that the people of New Zealand will tolerate either extreme, hut that the future lies with a Liberal party that will cm- ] hark on a hold progressive programme which will appeal to radical elements i in all classes. Whatever is the out- , come of the session to to ho held noxl month. Liberals must lie vigilant, and prepare for the future. Even if the Prime Minister succeeds in weather-, ing the storm, his position will be difficult, and ho will be obliged to pay; more heed to criticism than lie has; during the past three years. Nor will ! any success ho may achieve in at- , trading to his support members on j the other side of the House do him any j good in the electorates. The Liberal j party is a strong Opposition with ex-; ccllent prospects of becoming stronger. ; It lacks organisation, however, and ; the business of setting up in every eonstituenoy n. body to promo to. Libcifll principles and look after Liberal in-: tcrest's should he taken in hand with- j out, delav. Liberalism has .sidlered m j New Zealand, as in England through association with Conservatism in a Coalition Government; and it it time that it made a. greater and more contorted effort to recover its ground. Yesterday’s enthusiastic deputation t.s a good beginning.
