[bt telegraph—m:n press association j WELLINGTON BURGLARIES. WELLINGTON, Jan 5. During the past ten weeks three daring burglaries have been committed in Wellington and some £7OO worth of goods stolen, the burglar*, managing to get clean away with the booty. It is understood tho police now believe certain men who aro in custody in connection with another offence, were responsible for the burglaries and evidence at present is beinjcollected by the detectives with the view to charging them with the offences, The police are inclined to the opinion that the goods wore not disposed of in Wellington, but were taken up country and hawked amongst tho settlers. j MURDER CHARGE LAID. AUCKLAND, Jan 4. At the Auckland Police Court. John Finnigan (31), ship’s fireman, was charged with having assaulted Con ! O'Keefe, and caused actual bodily harm. A sensation was caused by Detective Mellvoney stating that the man alleged to have been assaulted had dim! in the hospital. The police would withdraw the charge of assault and substitute one of murder. Accused and deceased were firemen on the. steamer Tredc.uhnm. There was some drinking among iho crew ashore on New Year’s Day. and an altercation In tween Finnigan and O’Keefe, ft wa s alleged that at midnight when O'Keefes was asle-p in his hunk, Finnigan pulled him out on the door .and kicked him on the head and hack. Finnigan was pulled off O'Keefe and tho latter was put hack in his bunk unconscious. He remained so until tho matter eaine to the knowledge of the officers next day. when he was sent to the hospital. Last night an operation was performed on O'Keefe who did not rally, and died at 9 o’clock this morning. Accused denied any knowledge ol tho assault when arrested. AN APPEAL ALLOWED.
