Westland Racing Club.

SECOND DAY’S RESULTS,

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 27th,

The Westland Racing Club had a very unfortunate experience for the second j day of their summer meeting. A light j rain fell in the early morning, which grew heavier after noon, while a northwest gale sprang up as the afternoon wore on until hy the time the third race was timed to start a wild burst of rain was followed with an increasing gale, which continued to grow in intensity, accompanied by heavy rain. As a result of the weather the attendance suffered, hut in spite of this it was very satisfactory under the circumstances. The course became very heavy, and the times recorded were very much in contrast to those of the previous day. The fields were good, in spite of the wet weather, the Westland Cup having eight starters and Wie hurdle race seven. Speculation, as was to be expected, showed a considerable drop, the totalisator turnover amounting to £7,250 for the day as against £1’2,4.1!) for the second day last year, and a total for the two days of C 15,704, as against £24,302 for last year. The various events were run olf smartly to time, hut the outside officials and jockeys had a miserable time against the driving gale and rain. The race for the Westland Cup brought out a smart field of eight, and the winner proved to he Prince I'crouz, owned hy Mr A. R. McConnon, of Kumnra. In presenting the handsome silver Cup (presented" by the Licensed Victuallers’ Association) which wont with the race, the President (.Mr A\ . E. Williams) congratulated the owner of Prince Feroirt on his success in annexing the very handsome Cup. Tie was specially glad because he was a West Coaster, a native of Ivuniara di,strict, and because his father had raced his colours on that course for a great many years in the past, when the affairs of the Club were not as successful as they now were. The race hail been well won, and he congratulated all concerned. The policy of the Club in presenting the cup had the hearty approval of the owners, as shown by the determined efforts made to win it. Thev had to thank the local Licensed Victuallers’ Association for their gift of the valuable cup. lie took the opportunity to welcome among them -Mr Andrew Stevenson, a former President of the Club, who had done much of the spade work in past days in the progress of the Club which had stood to it well. Mr Stevenson had always hail a wet day or two, and on his present visit seemed to have brought it hack again, (laughter.) lie would ask .Mr .Stevenson to make the presentation. Mr Andrew Stevenson said it was with great pleasure that he presented the fine cup won hy Mr McConjion, and congratulated the Club on the great iiw, provements made in the past seventeen years. In presenting the Cup won he, congratulated the owner on the success of his horse.

. Mr McConnon accepted with the greatest of pleasure. He was proud to do so, hut none would he proudei than his father.
