In view of the definite intention of the Government to hand over the Kll- - main road to the Westland County Council, that body will meet at the usual date next month to deal with the matter. The usual holiday adjournment will not he observed on this occasion. Meantime, the officers of the Council are engaged in preparing a report on the condition of tlie road and bridges along the route of -15 miles which is to become the care of the Council after the 31st March next.
Mr T. 10. V. Seddon returned to tlie Const on Boxing Ray, and was present at the Hokitika races yesterday, being welcomed very heartily by numerous friends, all of whom were pleased to learn -Mrs Seddon was making very good progress and hojK*d to return homo next week. .Mr Seddon lias resumed the practice of his profession with Hannan and Seddon, barristers and Solicitors, Grey-mouth, and will reside permanently’ in the northern town.
On Monday next (New Year's Day), there will lie a grand sports programme on Cass Square. This year the Caledonian Society and Hokitika Cycling Cluh have joined together to ensure a first class ' gathering. There will be good cycling events, chopping and sawing, and running events, sonic of the handicaps appeared in our yesterday’s issue. Then there will be also a number of Scottish dancing items, for which nominations have conic from all parts of the Const. The Pipe Hand will be present, and there will be games and races for the young people, so that a very pleasant afternoon should be assured.
The death took place at Christchurch on Tuesday morning of Mr A. E. G. Rhodes. Deceased was a well-known public man, mid a former Mayor of Christchurch. In 1892 Mr Rhodes married Miss Rose Moorhouse, a bn the) of Mr W. Sefton Moorhouse, one t
the Superintendents of the Province of Canterbury. Mr Rhodes is survived by Mrs Rhodes, and leaves one son, Captain Tabu Rhodes, M.V.0., (who married the Hon. Helen Plunkot, eldest daughter of the late Lord Pluuket, onetime Governor of New Zealand), and one daughter who is liiariied to Major G. F. Hutton. D. 5.0.. of Bangor, Hawkins.
