The financial committee appointed in respect to . the proposed Exhibition, for next year met at the Cdunty Chfiihbers yesterday afternoon. Present:— Messrs G. A. Perry (in the chair), W. Jeffries, 11. Wild, D. J. Evaiis Hon. H. L. Michel. Apologies were re-' reived from Messrs A. Aitkcn, G. Davidson and W. Butler. Messrs Wild and Evans reported in regard to the eonferenoe at Christchurch with Mr W. T. Woodroffe in respect to the building programme. - It was indicated that a capital of £3,000 instead of £5,000 would suffice for the proposed non-profit Company to assure the financial arrangemests. The proposed building scheme on the Town Hall site was indicated whereby Air Woodroffe anticipated being able to provide 70,<XX)ft. of space, equal to the Christchurch Exhibition. Various suggestions put forward were communicated to the meeting, including the idea to hold exhibitions of home industries, flowers, etc. during the progress of the Exhibition which it was -v suggested .should be named tho British and Intercolonial Exhibition to commemorate' tho opening of the Arthur'3 Pass tunnel—the largest public work of its kind in the Southern Hemis- ■. phefe. It was resolved to mpke application fdr the' use. of the various buildings which would lie required, iilcludifig the | Town Hall, Drill Hall, HortitWtufSl Hall, Fire Brigade Station, as well as portion of the Bank of New Zealand section, and part of Mncandrew Square with tlie Carnegie Library for an art a gallery. - . It was decided to circularise the ex-' hibitors at the Christchurch Exliibij tion in reference to the contemplated ‘ Exhibition and to invite their support i when the prospectus was issued in the New Year. It was agreed to apply for the first olfor ta purchase plant nnd decorative material etc. from the Christchurch Exhibition if same'was to be disposed of. ■ It wns resolved to make enquiry froni the Underwriters Association as to rates of fire insurance, and to aslt leave of Renton and Coy. to stall the fire appliances in their Implement Store in Tailored Street if the Brigade and Fire Board jointly agreed to tho use of the Fire Station for Exhibition purposes.- . . j The opening date for the Exhibition was suggested for Saturday, Dec. 15th. 1923. the exhibition to run to thd find of January* i 924. The closing date would lie subject to revision ba thd Exhibition progressed. Mr Jeffries intimated that he had received by that day’s mail, an application for exhibition space from an Auckland firm, which indicated that already an interest was being taken tlio project. , ' - It was reported Mr Woodroffe was now preparing a large scale plan of tho proposed building arrangements, and would work out the available space. This would be to hand shortly, and lie would come over as soon as the Christchurch Exhibition closed, and confer as to definite arrangements. It would be possible to make the stands , and avenues more roomy than in CliriXt church, with a good central avenue - til the Camp street section of the buildings whero a large stage could be erected for public entertainments. It was decided to await tho arrival _ot Air Woodroffe to explain the building proposal in detail before calling a general meeting of the committees to finally launch the scheme. . , Other aspects of the exhibition were discussed in detail, after which, tlie meeting adjourned over the holidays to, await the arrival of the building plans. Under the scheme proposed, it it contemplated having the entrance to the Exhibition from Hamilton Street through the Fire Brigade station in preference to the first proposal from Revell Street.
