IbY TKLEGKAPH —-PER PRESS ASSOCIATIOP FIRE AT TAIHAPK. TAII-lAPE. December 18. At 3.-15 on Sunday morning a large block of buildings was totally destroyed by fire. The building was occupied by .Mr S. Peyton, auctioneer, and Mr Cook, a fruiterer, and was owned by Messrs Collinson and Gifford, draper The fire brigade saved adjoining buildings. ’Pile drapery establishment of CMllinsoii and Gifford, one one side, was only slightly damaged and the building on the other side, occupied by C .Goodall, painter and paperhanger did not suffer serious injury. But for the fire brigade, it is probable that one of the most valuable blocks in Tnibape would have Loon destroyed.
CAR ACCIDENT. WELLINGTON. lee 29. The Seecrtnry of the Past and Telegraph Department received a message yesterday afternoon from Postmaster at Tarawera reporting an accident to the mail car on Napier-I'aupo service. Three miles south of Tarawera the steering gear collapsed and (lie ear was precipitated into a creek. There were three passengers in the ear. The drivey and one passenger, an elderly lady, are reported to be v. inmsly injured. Hawke's Bay Motor Coy. is sending a relief car with a doctor to the scene of the accident. SCULLING.
CHRISTCHURCH. December 19. The inter-school fours were rowed at ■Lyttelton Harbour over a mile course to-day, in a favourable wind, but choppy sea. Result: Wanganui 1. Christ’s College 2. Christchurch High School 3. The only starters. Won by five lengths. FOUND DROWNED. WELLINGTON. Dee. 20 Yesterday afternoon, a youth walking along the foreshore beyond Thorndoii breastwork. observed some clothes lying near the water. Looking round to see if he could discover the owner, he saw ■* body floating in the wafer. He reported the matter to Captain Watson, of the .Martiroil who obtained a boat and with 1 lie* assistance oT another man, brought the body to tin* shore. Artificial respiration was kept up for some time, but without avail. Deceased, who was an elderly man, was identified as George Taylor, residing at S 3 Constable Street, lie had boon out of work for some time.
CHRISTCHURCH FIRE. CHRISTCHURCH, December 19. The fire which destroyed the wooden building occupied hv l.utjohaun's bdliard table factory was very rapid, and intense and threatened the adjoining Salvation Army Barracks in brick and also \Vildcy's brick printing works. Liitjolianii’s building was owned by Mr McCormick. The loss on the building and stock is not ascertainable. WiHoy's had a lucky save but considerable damage was done to the stock and niaehine.ry by water, the less including quantities of stationery and railway timetables. December 18. Flank Webb, aged thirty-three. a returned soldier, was electrocuted at To Aruba. through accidentally touching a live wire whilst repairing a Breakdown. A STORM. HASTINGS. December 20. Yesterday Hastings and (listret was struck by a storm of unusual viofen'e. Hailstones were large and considerably damaged the fruit crops, and a deluge of rain flooded the streets, the water invading some business premises thr .ugh defective roofs and damaging the stocks. The hailstorm was confined to a comparatively small urea. The visitation was of such severity that it was quite unprecedented.
